My story…

I woud like to introduce myself as a self taught artist and now doing pastel art.

I do not have any formal training but I have learned it by watching YouTube videos and blogs of masters like JD Hillberry, Rick Forston, Stonedsour to name some…

Also I have studied old and past masters like Peter Paul Rubens, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Eduord Manet to name some…

In drawing I was always interested but I started it a bit seriously in 2012 as a psychotherapy. The first drawing that I did in Oct 2012 was created using only a B pencil.

Tom Hanks

2012

Pencil on paper.

At that time i thought i cannot get better than this!

But now i know how wrong i was!

Very much impressed by the result I tried my hand at Drawing my first female portrait.

Katrina Kaif

2012

Pencil on paper

This is almost same as the previous drawing but a little improvement!

Getting better so I tried one half body portrait of Bruce Lee!

Bruce Lee

2013

Pencil on paper

This drawing was the turning point as this drawing was stretched to months….. Yes neuronal development takes time 🙂

But it was lacking something…

Until now I used graphite pencils exclusively so the values are rather limited.

In my next portrait I tried something new!

I used both black and white charcoal (pastel) and here is the result!

Katrina Kaif

2013

Graphite/charcoal/Pastel on paper

Notice the depth in it as compared to previous drawings!

The previous drawings showed shine when held at an angle, since graphite is shiny, but this drawing does not show any of it!

Now have a look at the texture on the skin, its so much improved from the previous one!

The secret? White charcoal!

One more landmark drawing in that year lot of use of charcoal.

Gladiator

Graphite/charcoal/pastel on paper

2013

This actually completes the full use of charcoal! Notice the darks! No shine (graphite shine) in the drawing at all!

I am fascinated by Shaolin monks and hence I tried also a one full body portrait. It was difficult to put those details in an A3 paper.

Shaolin Kungfu

Graphite/Charcoal/pastel on Paper

2013

In 2014 I continued to draw various portraits and drawings in graphite/charcoal/pastel

This one is a half body portrait of Brad Pitt

Graphite charcoal/pastel on paper

2014

Huge use of charcoal blocks! It may not be apparent but in all my drawings the charcoal is also applied to the face! For eg in this drawing the part of the face which is in shadow has a lot of charcoal applied to it. This gives a big reality boost to the drawing by increasing the range of values dramatically!

From this portrait I started using a different paper. A more higher quality one , that of Derwent (great for charcoal and very resistant). And here is the result.

Deepika Padukone

Graphite/charcoal/pastel on paper

2014

Now here the realism has increased some fold than the previous drawings.

Except the white of the eyeball, the charcoal is applied almost everywhere!

Now i wanted to try drawing beard and I am fan of Krishna Das so here is his portrait..

Krishna Das

Graphite/charcoal/pastel on paper

I had now got quite an experience in human portraiture so why not animal after all I love wildlife

So here is my first animal portrait!

The Magnificent one

Graphite/charcoal/pastel on paper

2014

For the trunk a combination of graphite/charcoal was used and also a white charcoal was used wherever i had to show light! This actually increases the depth so much so that in reality you may feel that the dark part is little depressed and the shining part is actually slightly out of the plane of paper!

Now here is tried something different yes.. water! I had never drawing water before. Extensive use of black and white charcoal to draw it!

Deep explorer

Graphite/charcoal/pastel on paper

2014

And also airplane, here in this one the front body of the plane actually feels slightly out of the paper while the wings feel a little depressed in the plane of the paper. This is because of the fact that wings contain extensive use of charcoal while the body contains mostly graphite, the shine being subdued by a little application of charcoal over graphite.

Now at this point i was using extensive black and white charcoal in my drawings so i thought i was using so much pastel why not use color pastel!

Now in the beginning of 2015 I started experimenting with colors.

Tried color pastel for first time here

Amitabh Bachchan

Pastel on paper

2015

First time try of pastel was a little difficult as now in addition to shades i had also to worry about color. Skin color in not available in pastel and i had to create it from primary colors.

Not bad for a first try I guess…

But then I returned to graphite/charcoal art and created this

Albert Einstein

Graphite/charcoal/pastel on paper

2015

As you can see the realism is actually now getting better and better with each drawing! And here i must say i was very pleased with how it has turned out!

Getting more and more patient putting those extra details…

Dalai Lama

Graphite/charcoal/pastel on paper

2015

Now i must say honestly that this drawing is something which i aspired when i began drawing in 2012.

Turned to wildlife life again…

Always wanted to draw a lion, the details forbid me from doing it earlier! Took quite some months… phew… It was something!

A Majestic Stare

Graphite/charcoal/pastel on paper

2015

And then the rhinoceros, by this time I had developed enough eye and patience to do it.

A tough wonder

graphite/charcoal/pastel on paper

2015

Also wanted to do something related to marine life as I love it as well so here is killer whale drawing. BTW this is my second water drawing and first time splashing one!

A beautiful breach

Graphite/charcoal/pastel on paper

2015

Now I wanted to do some more color pastel works and since it has quite a bit of softness it’s is great to render skin and fur both

So I started with a portrait of Aishwarya Rai!

Aishwarya Rai

Pastel on paper

2015

This was another landmark and this was stretched over months. Pastel is more advanced medium as now not only one has to put shades but also proper color.

I was quite happy with the result!

This is another drawing of the most beautiful actress Katrina Kaif

Katrina Kaif

Pastel on paper

A3

And also I drew Deepika Padukone!

Deepika Padukone

Pastel on paper

Then i drew also Leonardo Dicaprio with a beard

Leonardo Dicaprio

Pastel on paper

An then finally i decided to do my first animal drawing in full color

Here it is

European wild hare

Pastel on paper

At the end of this drawing my grip on pastel improved significantly

Royal Bengal tiger – The Heart of India

Pastel on paper

Second animal portrait in pastel and wanting to do more animal/wildlife portraits in this beautiful medium!

Thank you for reading this long answer. I hope this helps you!
